UGC for ecommerce product pages

Choose, place and review customer and creator content that answers real buying questions on an ecommerce product page.

Use user-generated content (UGC) on a product page when it answers a purchase question that the existing images, specifications and copy leave open. Choose the question first, then select a credible asset and place it where the shopper needs it. A lively video that carries no clear product information makes the page busier without making the choice easier.

Here, UGC includes customer contributions and commissioned creator content. Keep each origin clear. A paid demonstration can be useful product media, but it should not appear as an independent customer review.

Find the gaps in the page

Read the page as a buyer seeing the product for the first time. Can they identify the variant, judge its size, see what is included and follow any important setup step?

Use product enquiries and returns feedback as prompts where available, then check the answer against current product information. A question about a bag’s capacity may call for a filmed packing sequence. A question about dimensions may be answered more precisely by a specification beside a scale image.

Give each proposed asset one job. Record the buyer question, filmed variant, evidence visible in the file and any limit on what it proves. Footage of one laptop fitting one bag does not establish that every laptop with a similar screen size will fit.

Give each kind of media a role

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) can require businesses to back up claims about products or services. It accepts reports about possible misleading or false claims, and uses those reports to inform its education, compliance and enforcement work.

Media Types and Their Roles on Ecommerce Product Pages

Consider whether a model fits the question

For products where shoppers need to judge size, scale or detail, a 3D model may answer questions a clip cannot. Shopify describes models shoppers can view from any angle and use with their device’s camera and screen to see the object in their environment.

A model is useful only if the page’s media support can display it and it contributes information the existing images do not. Check its role against the specific product question rather than adding another format by default.

Pros and Cons of Using 3D Models on Product Pages

  • ProsAllows shoppers to view product from any angle; enables AR preview in real environment
  • ConsOnly useful if media support exists and adds unique information not covered by images or clips

Keep claims supportable

Distinguish a contributor’s first-hand observation from a broader product claim. Ensure the contribution’s wording and context do not imply performance across variants or use cases the content does not show.

Key Regulatory and Technical Considerations for UGC in Australian Ecommerce

ACCC enforcement authority
Can require businesses to back up claims about products or services
GA4 ecommerce tracking
Requires Google tag and access to source code
Accessibility standard
W3C recommends planning accessibility from the start
Video loading impact
Poster and embedded players affect page performance

Choose the position from the question

A handling clip may belong in the gallery, where shoppers inspect the action alongside product images. A fit or compatibility answer may be more useful near the size selector or specification. Keep delivery, returns and warranty answers with the applicable policy information; a personal account cannot establish those terms.

On a phone, check whether the answer and any necessary qualification stay close enough to connect. Label the filmed colour or size when the page offers several variants. A thumbnail should give a fair indication of what the clip shows.

Check the store’s media support before approving an export. Shopify requires a theme that supports video for videos to display on product pages. Preview the intended file in the actual template; another platform or gallery may behave differently.

Process for Adding Supportive UGC to a Product Page

  1. Identify the buyer questione.g., bag capacity, fit with laptop, dimensions
  2. Select credible asset that answers the questionEnsure origin is clear (customer or creator)
  3. Place the asset where the shopper needs itNear size selector, specifications, or policy section
  4. Check accessibility and loadingAdd captions, transcripts, and test on mobile
  5. Validate measurement implementationConfirm GA4 events are tracked correctly

Check access and loading

Where speech or meaningful sound carries information, provide accurate captions. Make essential visual information available to people who cannot see the video, through an appropriate description or equivalent text. Check that captions and controls do not cover the action.

Inspect the rendered page on a phone. Video, its poster and embedded players can affect loading. The suitable loading approach depends on the media’s position and player, so check the page rather than assuming a smaller export solves every issue.

Make accessibility part of the media plan

The W3C recommends planning accessibility from the start; integrating description into a script before filming can be easier than adding it later. A transcript gives shoppers a text version of speech and other audio, while a descriptive transcript also describes visual information.

A descriptive transcript is needed to provide video content to people who are both Deaf and blind. Consider sign language when your audience needs it, and use a player that supports accessibility; captions and a visual description alone do not address every access need.

Decide what success would mean

Name the intended change before adding media: perhaps fewer questions about box contents, or more shoppers reaching the basket after viewing the product. Plays and completions show interaction; on their own, they do not show improved understanding or extra sales.

If the store uses GA4, ecommerce events can collect information about shoppers’ behaviour, including viewing item details, adding products to a cart and making purchases. Enhanced measurement can collect interactions through options enabled for a web data stream, but this does not establish tracking for every product-gallery player.

Define and validate any extra gallery events before comparing assets or pages. Review results by product and variant, accounting for traffic and other page changes.

Keep a record of each asset’s question, filmed variant, approved file, position, permission reference and claim reviewer. Revisit the pairing when the product or page changes.

Check the measurement implementation

For GA4 ecommerce reporting, Google says to add the Google tag and ensure you can access Analytics and the website source code. Its recommendations include using debug mode to inspect events in real time and troubleshoot, following the documented event format, and setting currency at event level when sending revenue data.

If using enhanced measurement, check which interactions are actually collected and ensure no personally identifiable information is collected.

In this guide

  1. Choosing demonstration clips for a product gallerySelect product-gallery clips that show a complete action, match the listed variant and remain clear in the actual mobile gallery.
  2. Placing UGC beside the buying question it answersMap product-page questions to useful media positions and keep variant labels and claim limits beside the UGC they qualify.
  3. Measuring product-page engagement with UGCDefine UGC impressions, plays and commerce outcomes on product pages, validate tracking and interpret results without overstating causation.
  4. Keeping customer testimonials separate from paid creator demonstrationsPresent genuine customer experiences and commissioned creator demonstrations clearly on an Australian product page.
