Comparing the same UGC asset across ad placements

Compare UGC performance by placement with exact file IDs, format-specific metrics and clear limits on what the result proves.

To compare a UGC asset across placements, confirm the exact file viewers saw, then read results by placement or ad format only when account reporting separates them. In TikTok Ads Manager, placement is selected at ad group level, and a TikTok placement may include several surfaces. Treat a difference as an observed comparison unless the test design supports a narrower causal claim.

Check what “same asset” means

Start with one approved source cut. Record an export ID for each uploaded file, including its crop, captions, sound, length, thumbnail and call to action. If any of these change, viewers may see a different creative even when the source footage is shared. Review each export’s product visibility and meaning.

A square crop could hide an opening action that remains visible in a vertical cut. That is a creative difference as well as a format difference. If the exact file serves in both places, record its ID.

On TikTok, listed placement choices include TikTok, Automatic placements and TikTok Pangle. Listed formats include Spark and non-Spark ads and In-feed ads (auction), so distinguish a placement comparison from a format comparison.

TikTok placement is a required ad group selection in TikTok Ads Manager. Selecting For You may also include Profile Feed, Following Feed, Friends Feed, TikTok Lite, TikTok for Web, Mini Drama Feed, Search Feed and Search Results Page; TikTok for Web and TikTok Lite are only available in certain markets.

Search Results Page ads appear as thumbnails alongside other search results. In Search Feed, users enter a video feed by clicking a search result and scrolling, where an ad may appear. Automatic Search Placement extends in-feed video campaigns to the search results page; it is on by default for new campaigns, but does not guarantee delivery there.

If a format needs an adapted export, record the adaptation and limit the conclusion. Also check whether the platform generated another version; the file ID alone may not establish what viewers saw. Confirm the served creative in the ad record or preview as well as checking the upload ID.

Compare only what the report separates

Record the campaign objective, audience eligibility, offer, landing page, dates, bid and budget method, attribution setting and primary measure. Keep the denominator and metric definition beside every rate. Attention, clicks and conversions answer different questions.

Check / Why it matters

File and rendered format
A crop or generated version may change the message.
Eligible audience
Different viewers may respond differently.
Delivery
A planned split may produce uneven exposure.
Metric definition
Confirm what the platform counts as a view.
Destination and offer
A change alters the action being measured.

TikTok Ads Manager's Split Testing tool lists Placement as a test variable, with auto-selected and manual placements; only one variable can be selected for each split test. The listed choices do not guarantee that every account can test the particular placements you want, so check availability and compatibility in the account.

TikTok lists compatible objectives for this test as Reach, Traffic, Video views, Community interaction, App promotion, Lead generation, Website conversions, Product sales and Sales. It lists campaign types including Branded Mission, Reach & Frequency, TopView, TikTok Pulse, Search campaign, App pre-registration, Paid content, Automotive ads and TikTok Shop as not compatible.

TikTok Ads Manager reporting gives search terms and Search Ads-specific metrics including cost and impressions. That does not establish a placement-level dimension or separate rows for Search Results Page and Search Feed; check the account for those rows before comparing the surfaces.

For example, if the account labels Search Results Page and Search Feed separately, compare the same export ID and selected measure across those rows and the same dates. Cost and impressions are Search Ads-specific metrics; the placement names tell you where the ad appeared, not why the results differ. Do not treat this example as an observed result.

An ad-format category may be broader than a particular placement, and a format segment does not necessarily identify every surface or audience condition behind its result. Where the platform provides separate placement or format results, compare them alongside a measure suited to the decision.

TikTok lists optimisation goals including Click, landing page view, 6-second view (focused view) and 15-second view (focused view). Use the same selected measure for both sides, and retain its reporting definition and denominator; the goal labels alone do not define how a reported view or rate is counted. A raw view total across placements is not a standalone judgement.

Pros and Cons of Comparing UGC Assets by Placement vs Format

  • Pros of Placement ComparisonIdentifies performance differences based on user context (e.g., For You feed vs Search Results Page); enables targeted optimisation
  • Cons of Placement ComparisonPlacements may include multiple surfaces; audience eligibility and delivery can vary, limiting causal claims
  • Pros of Format ComparisonClearer distinction between Spark and non-Spark ads; easier to isolate creative design impact
  • Cons of Format ComparisonFormat may not reflect actual surface-level delivery; some formats serve across multiple placements

State the limit of the result

Use a bounded readout: “For file [ID], [selected measure] was higher in [reported placement or format] than [other reported placement or format] during [dates]; delivery and audience differences remain possible explanations.” This is a template, not a reported result. Confirm that no generated or adapted version changed what viewers saw before calling it the same file in practice.

TikTok lists Placement as a split-test variable, with auto-selected and manual placements, and permits only one variable per split test. The test is subject to compatibility limits and does not guarantee that the particular surfaces you want can be compared.

Check the available choices in the account; the presence of that variable does not guarantee a particular placement-to-placement test. If reporting cannot separate the formats or the creative changed materially, record the observation and plan a cleaner comparison.
