Removing platform watermarks from a licensed source file

Handle a platform watermark in licensed UGC by finding the clean source, checking edit rights and reviewing the new export for its exact placement.

Start with the creator’s clean recording or editing project. Export a new copy to make a licensed UGC file without a platform watermark.

A licence may permit a particular use. It does not reveal detail hidden beneath a baked-in mark or automatically permit a new edit or destination. Check the agreement and intended placement first.

Identify where the mark entered the file

Compare the delivered file with the original recording and project export, if available. A mark may have been added to a downloaded post, or it may already be part of the only file supplied. Ask for the highest-quality clean source the creator is authorised to provide, and record its relationship to the approved cut.

On a downloaded post, check for a TikTok or Instagram watermark; TikTok’s mark is described as a bouncing logo and username that follow the video. Compare the file with the original recording or project export to see whether the mark entered on download or was already present.

If the creator is preparing a TikTok video, ask for a clean version from the pre-publication draft. Saving a TikTok video as a draft before publishing is described as a way to retain original quality and avoid relying on a downloaded post.

If a mark is baked into a flattened video, clean image detail may no longer exist beneath it. Blurring or painting over the area can leave a patch, obscure the product or alter the picture. A crop is suitable only if it preserves the full product action and claim. If no clean source exists, assess whether the asset remains suitable for that placement.

Watermark origin: downloaded post vs. pre-publication draft

  • Downloaded postMay contain baked-in TikTok or Instagram watermarks (e.g., bouncing logo and username). Check against original recording.
  • Pre-publication draft (TikTok)Saving as a draft retains original quality; can provide a clean version before watermarking occurs.

Check permission, credit and disclosure separately

A platform watermark is different from creator credit, a sponsorship disclosure and permission to use a post. Do not remove a credit or disclosure that the agreement or applicable rules require.

Check the terms for editing, attribution, channels and paid use, and keep a record of permission for the planned export. Australian copyright licences can grant particular uses without transferring ownership.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) provides general guidance on avoiding false or misleading claims in social media promotions. It can require businesses to back up claims they make on social media and may investigate or take compliance or enforcement action.

For promoting a creator’s TikTok post on TikTok, Spark Ads can use an organic post with the creator’s authorisation. Spark Ads allow posts from other creators with their authorisation, and the authorisation code duration can be customised to campaign needs. That authorisation does not itself grant rights for a separate upload elsewhere.

If an edited file will be uploaded as a new ad, check the commercial agreement and rights to any music or other embedded material.

Key checks before exporting a clean UGC file

  • Confirm creator’s authorised clean sourceRequest the highest-quality export available under the licence agreement.
  • Preserve required disclosures and creditsDo not remove mandatory sponsorship disclosures or attribution as required by law or contract.
  • Review rights for music and embedded contentEnsure permission extends to any audio, graphics or third-party material in the file.

Apply the exact placement rule

Watermark policies vary by format. TikTok’s Reservation Takeover guidance disallows watermarks, including TikTok’s own; it does not establish a rule for every TikTok ad or another platform. Check the current specification for the intended placement.

For a TikTok Reservation Takeover video, the listed requirements are MP4, a file size of no more than 5 MB and one of these dimensions: 1242×2208, 1080×1920, 750×1624, 750×1334, 720×1280 or 640×1136. Takeover videos are full-screen, maximum 5 seconds and sound-off; keep key text and logos in the Safe Zone, avoid transparent backgrounds and use the preview tool to check cropping and coverage.

For Spark Ads, organic videos have no restrictions on ratio, resolution, file type, bitrate or file size, but videos have a 10-minute maximum. Confirm that the chosen format is the creator’s authorised organic post if using Spark Ads.

Compare the clean export with the approved cut. Check the product, speech, captions, creator identity and qualifications, then review the full file at phone size. Record approval for the new file and its permitted destinations. If the only available alteration would hide product detail or change the creator’s meaning, request another source or choose another asset.
