Retiring UGC creatives after repeated weak results

Decide when repeated weak UGC results justify retirement, when evidence is inconclusive and when a revision is worth testing.

Retire a UGC creative from a named ad use when adequately delivered, comparable attempts repeatedly miss the campaign’s pre-set decision standard and no defined repair is worth testing. Preserve the file and its history. One short run or a weak dashboard label alone does not settle the decision.

Check whether the attempts count

Name the creative’s job and primary measure before judging it. An opening built to earn attention calls for an attention measure; a purchase decision needs reliable conversion measurement. Set the campaign-specific comparison rule before reading the outcome. No universal UGC view-rate or cost threshold makes a creative unusable.

For each run, check the exact export, product and offer, eligible audience, placement, dates and delivery. Did the ad serve enough for the chosen decision?

Did the destination and tracking work? Did anything material change mid-run? A different crop or offer is evidence about that version and context, not automatically another failed attempt by the original file.

Separate weak evidence from a weak creative

Limited or uneven delivery, missing tracking or a changed offerMark inconclusive and repair the comparison.
A specific opening or proof problem that available footage could addressDefine one revision and test the new export.
A product mismatch or unsupported claimHold the asset until its message is corrected, regardless of performance.

These are review categories, not campaign findings. A creative may be weak in one format and useful elsewhere, but that other use needs its own evidence and approval. Do not call several low-volume observations repeated proof.

Record what retirement means

Record the variant and export IDs, runs considered, primary measure, comparison rule, delivery limits and decision owner. Use a status that describes the next action: active, revision proposed, paused pending evidence, or retired from the named use. Retirement stops that planned delivery; it need not erase the source file or past reports.

A revised hook or proof sequence gets a new variant or export record and another claim review. Do not replace a weak file while attributing later results to the old one.

If the original remains approved for another use, record that separately. Before a later relaunch, recheck the current product message and permission for that use.
