UGC hooks and opening scenes
Plan UGC opening frames and hooks that lead into an honest product demonstration, with practical checks for the finished sequence.
A UGC hook should give viewers a reason to watch this product in this situation, then lead to footage that answers the question it raises. Plan the opening and the next scene together.
Here, UGC means content commissioned from a creator for a brand. The opening should not present the creator as an independent customer or imply product experience they have not had.
Choose what viewers need first
Start with the question the complete video answers. Then choose an opening that leads naturally to the relevant footage.
| Opening | Useful when | What should follow |
|---|---|---|
| Problem | A specific use situation needs context | The product entering that situation |
| Question | Viewers need a reason to inspect a detail | Footage that answers the question |
| Demonstration | The action is clear at a glance | Context that identifies the product and result |
| Product detail | A visible feature draws attention | A wider view showing what the detail belongs to |
These are creative options, not a ranking. A question may delay a simple answer; an immediate action may confuse viewers if they cannot identify the item.
Plan the hook with a brief
Rocket Agency says a good UGC brief should outline the key message while leaving room for the creator's voice. It typically includes the target audience, so the creator can shape the opening to that audience without losing their own style.
Titan Blue's content marketing best practices for Australian SMBs say to know your audience inside and out. For an Australian construction company, a project manager's pain points such as supply chain delays and compliance differ from a residential client's concerns. That difference should shape which hook feels relevant.
RGC Digital Marketing (19 March 2025) advises starting with a hook that draws your audience in. Make the story relatable through shared experiences, keep your brand's values at the core, and use visuals or real-life examples.
The same report notes short-form videos continue to dominate. Consumers can't get enough of video content.
RGC Digital Marketing also says generic content is out and compelling narratives are in. Bland, one-size-fits-all content is scrolled past; audiences want content that speaks to them personally and creates an emotional bond with the brand.
The report warns that overreliance on AI is a risk: content can look polished but feel hollow, and audiences are savvy enough to spot it. Automation should enhance efficiency, not replace creativity.
Connect the opening to the product
Write a short note covering the first frame, any opening words and the next shot. For a hypothetical storage box, the first frame could show the box beside a narrow shelf.
The creator asks whether it fits; the next shot shows that exact box being placed on the shelf. The filmed result determines the truthful answer. One successful fit would not support “fits any shelf”.
A problem scene or a creator speaking to camera can work without a full product shot in the first frame. Bring the advertised item into the sequence promptly so viewers can connect the opening to what the ad offers. Check that the model, variant and visible accessories remain consistent with the demonstration and destination page.
Commission the opening with clear parameters
Influee, an Australian UGC platform, works with over 4,000 creators in Australia and says more than 1,800 brands use it. It matches brands with what it calls the top 3% of creators and has a 4.9 rating.
The platform's campaigns can be filtered by 20 video types, including hooks, unboxing, testimonials and B-roll. Choosing a type early helps the creator plan the first frame and the next scene.
Influee says creators apply to a campaign within 24 hours and deliver UGC videos within 7 to 10 days after receiving the product. Brands can use an AI writer for the script or let creators come up with it.

Review the promise in the finished cut
Watch the opening through to its answer. Does a question get resolved? Does a visual omit a step or condition needed to understand the result? Do the speech, captions and images point to the same product and outcome?
If filming reveals a narrower or mixed result, change the opening to fit it. Review the assembled video at its intended viewing size, with and without sound. If the sequence is unclear, fix the connection before developing more hooks.
The ACCC provides general guidance on social media promotions and can require businesses to back up claims made on social media. It can investigate and take compliance or enforcement action if a business makes false or misleading claims in social media advertising.
The ACCC accepts reports where people consider a business is doing something it shouldn't, but it does not resolve individual disputes about misleading claims. Brands should keep evidence for any opening claim they make.
Keep test footage or product specifications that show the claim is accurate. If the opening says a storage box fits a narrow shelf, retain the footage showing that exact box on that shelf.
